Here, as part of APIL’s Injury Awareness Week campaign 2024, we share a recent client case example of an accident at work.

The case:

This client, a motor technician, was in the workshop at his place of work.  He slipped on a wet tiled floor, suspected to have been caused through rain leaking via a faulty skylight.

He landed on his back, twisting his left knee and hitting his head on a drain grid.  Liability for the accident was admitted. The injuries he suffered were:

  • Medial meniscal tear of the left knee requiring arthroscopy with an increased 25-30% risk of developing osteoarthritis. There was the risk of future physiotherapy, injections and further surgery.
  • 24-month soft tissue back injury (pain radiating to the right hip) but essentially settled by 12 months.
  • 9-12 month exacerbation of pre-existing degenerative change in the right shoulder.
  • Head injury – a laceration with some ongoing headaches.
  • Psychological symptoms.

For the injuries he suffered as a result of the accident, he was awarded £85,000 in compensation.
