£5,000 Compensation For Victim of Negligent Dermatological Treatment

What happened: Our client was referred to a Dermatologist for treatment of a facial cyst/lesion. A steroid injection was recommended rather than excision and our client was advised that there would be no side effects. However, following the procedure the injection caused atrophy (wasting away) in the area of the injection and they developed a large, easily noticeable depressed scar on their cheek, which required plastic surgery.

The effect on our client: Our client suffered from pain and was very self-conscious of the indentation on their cheek, resulting in a loss of confidence and psychiatric symptoms. They also required further treatment in the form of a fat or stem cell transfer to the face to elevate the scar and make it less obvious.

How TRUE Solicitors were able to help: We brought a claim on behalf of our client on the grounds that they had not been warned about the possible side effects of the steroid injection and that there had been a failure to obtain their informed consent. It was also alleged that the steroid was being used in circumstances for which it was not licensed and that the injection had been into the subcutaneous layer, causing the atrophy and skin indentation. No admissions were made by the Defendant and it was necessary to start Court proceedings. Supportive medical expert evidence was obtained and we were able to negotiate settlement once this was finalised.

Level of settlement achieved: £5,000
