Top Tips For Staying Safe Whilst Cycling At Night
2 December 2019
Many people can be put off by cycling at night, however there are many safety measures that you can implement to remain visible and safe on the roads. There are also legal requirements that must be adhered to when going out on your bike when it is dark outside.
Legal requirements when cycling in the dark
It is the law that cyclists must have lights and reflectors fitted to their bicycle when using the roads when it’s dark at night or in the early morning. This includes fitting:
• A front white light that should have a 110 degree visibility.
• A rear light that must be red.
• A red rear reflector.
• BS6102/2 amber reflectors on the front and rear of each pedal.
Hi-Vis Clothing
It is a good idea to wear high-vis clothing to ensure that you are clearly seen by other road users. You can improve your visibility by:
• Wearing reflective strips, wristbands and gloves.
• Wearing a hi-vis jacket.
• Attaching reflective strips to your backpack.
• Attaching a rear light to your backpack and/or helmet for extra visibility.
• Ensuring that the batteries in your lights are in full working order.
Plan your route
It is a good idea to ride on roads that you are familiar with when it’s dark, to avoid any surprises such potholes or poorly surfaced roads that may cause damage to your bike or cause you to have an accident.
Ride with a group or partner
If possible try and always cycle with a friend or group. This will provide you with safety in numbers and any necessary help with mechanical issues if you have trouble with your bike.
