bbc panorama reveals the extent of mouldy homes

11 February 2025

BBC News on the 10th February 2025 reported that shockingly “more than half a million rented homes – both private and social – have black mould issues in England, a 2023 government survey found.”

Back in 2022 following the distressing results of the inquest, we covered the tragic case of Awaab Ishak’s death in 2020, which was found to have been caused directly from inhalation of black mould spores. This case prompted the government to draw up new legislation designed to protect social housing tenants in England from unsafe living conditions. This legislation is yet to come into effect.

In 2023, we reported an significant increase in the rise of cases we were receiving from tenants living in council homes and housing association homes deemed to be far below acceptable living conditions. Sadly these cases continue to be on the rise, despite the government’s commitment to protect private renters from damp and mould problems in their homes. However, the new legislation is expected to be enforced from October 2025.

Panorama investigated the condition of rented properties in Britain with a programme dedicated to the issue last night. The programme can be viewed now on iPlayer.
