The case:
Our client attended hospital as an outpatient for what she anticipated was approximately a 1-hour coronary angiography procedure, meaning her being able to return to work within a couple of days.
As part of the pre-op procedure, the doctor who would be performing the angiography introduced themselves to our client.
Whilst in the room where the procedure was taking place, our client noted 6 other members of medical staff were present, some of whom she had not been introduced to and was unsure as to who they were. One of these members of staff commenced the procedure on our client, and whilst doing so caused pain in her groin despite having been issued an anaesthetic. A further dose of anaesthetic was given, and the procedure continued though unsuccessfully with additional holes created in our client’s groin, split veins causing bleeding and her experiencing pain and discomfort, before the completion of the angiography was passed back to the original doctor who should have carried out the procedure.
Post op our client suffered from continuing pain, swelling and a bloated stomach and was admitted to hospital overnight before being discharged the next day. 2 days post her return home, our client felt it necessary to visit her GP complaining of continued pain and she was diagnosed with a water infection, and again several days later where she was then referred to A&E and diagnosed with a build-up of fluid in her chest.
How we helped:
Our client was unable to work for 4 weeks post her procedure during which time she received no sick pay, and as a result of the errors she’d endured, we were able to recover £8,750 in compensation for her.
Our client gave the following feedback:
