Bike Ride1

Intrepid Anna Deakin will leave her job in a top law firm behind for a week to embark on a 400 kilometre epic charity bike ride across Cuba.

The 27-year-old litigation executive, based in the Leeds office of national law firm TRUE Solicitors, will pedal her way across the Caribbean island for five days in a group of women cyclists as part of the Women V Cancer challenge.

The rainy season, humidity, rocky roads and unique Cuban culture are all a far cry from Anna’s day job working to help injured accident victims.

But she is relishing the prospect of tackling the Cycle Cuba event in May which will see the funds raised by competitors going towards the charities Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.

Her friend Jen Noble, 32, will be pedalling at Anna’s side in the event.

The cycle ride begins and ends in the Cuban capital Havana, taking in beach resorts, rural farmland, a memorial to the legendary revolutionary Che Guevara and sugar cane country before heading back into the vibrant capital after five days on the road.

“I’ve had a few friends’ parents who have passed away through cancer and I thought it would be a challenge to raise money for charity in this way,” said Anna, from Barnsley.

“I read about the challenge in a magazine and I thought it would be a lifetime achievement and something to look back on in years to come.”

Anna needs to raise a minimum of £2,900 to support the work of Women V Cancer charities and is asking people and companies to help her reach that target.

“I’m very grateful to my employers TRUE Solicitors for sponsoring me for the event and supplying equipment I’ll need for the journey and I’d like to raise as much as possible for such great charities, “ she said.

She has endured a gruelling six-month training schedule to ensure that saddle sores and fatigue won’t hamper her Cuban adventure.

“The last time I was on a bike was 15 years ago, and I haven’t owned a bike since I was a child,” said Anna.

“It’s a bit daunting! The training makes me nervous and so does not knowing that much about Cuba. My family and friends can’t believe that I’m doing this, I’m not the fittest person, I do go to the gym but this isn’t the sort of thing I normally do.”
